Your weekly Rage Review Episode 24: Cocaine Bear “And you know what? That bear is a damn fine actor.” It’s said that truth is stranger than fiction… Cocaine bear is “inspired by true events” which means the film likely took liberties with the actual story to make it more interesting, entertaining or marketable. So maybe fiction just makes truth stranger… I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought this was a stupid title and would be a stupid movie… But Elizabeth Banks is awesome. Beautiful, funny, super talented. So, I gave it a chance. Cocaine Bear is exactly what it promises to be. A bear finds cocaine that’s been tossed off a plane, devours it, becomes an addict and literally goes hyper CUJO on unsuspecting park visitors. And the drug dealers who want it back. Just how CUJO the bear goes, is what makes this light horror comedy both amusing and inconsistent. It’s never clear why it attacks some and not others despite implying that if you’ve touched the cocaine you become bear prey. At first, I really wanted to dislike this film. Cocaine Bear’s sub-plots seemed like light filler, and the acting seemed a bit inconsistent at times, like the story. But despite it’s short comings its runtime of 95 minutes somehow made it more palatable. And by the end, I actually didn’t mind it. And you know what? That bear is a damn fine actor. Not a bad effort, Ms. Banks… And rest in peace, Ray Liotta… Beerbohmtastic is free today.
