I love to be able to bring you good news! Republican legislators are pulling out of a South Carolina bill that aims to make abortion punishable by the death penalty. We did this. Abortion, Every Day broke the news about this legislation a full month before the mainstream media caught on. And the community here raised the alarm on social media and beyond, turning the bill into a huge national story. As of this weekend, nine legislators have removed their name from the bill, hilariously arguing that they didn’t realize what it actually said. (Seriously: Rep. Brandon Guffey, for example, said, “I read through it, but I did not click on the code that it linked to stating that a woman should get the death penalty.”) Thanks to Abortion, Every Day’s early coverage and the ensuing public outrage—driven by readers like you!—this radical legislation is becoming impossible for Republicans to support.
